Hi everyone, I am Prodip Roy, currently, I work as the Library Officer at RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia. I am also a part-time PhD candidate in Business Information Systems studying under the School of Accounting, Information Systems and Supply Chain at RMIT University. I was born and raised in Bangladesh and in 2009 I migrated to Australia as a qualified librarian. I have been working as a Library Professional in Local and State Government as well as the tertiary education sector in Australia and overseas for sixteen years. Besides my regular job and study, I have been a Delegate and branch committee member of The National Tertiary Education Union, Australia for the RMIT branch. I am the Co-Chair(Elect) SIG-III, Association for Information Science & Technology (ASIS&T), a member of Creative Commons Global Network, an existing member for Creative Commons Australia Chapter and lead responsible for Open Ed (Tertiary). As the founder and Editor in Chief, I lead The Librarian Times team in implementing its vision and mission.

M. Shamsul Islam Khan (1949-2021)

In memory of M. Shamsul Islam Khan, TLT held a mourning program on Friday, 24 September 2021, at 10 AM. The program was conducted through a zoom call, and a significant number of professionals joined the mourning program along with M Shamsul Islam Khan’s Family.
Prof. SM Mannan, Department of Information Science and library management, Dhaka University, convened the program. Honourable Vice-Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Prof. Dr Md. Sharfuddin Ahmed was present as the special guest to share his memory. The library professionals from all levels, including medical libraries, academic libraries, special libraries, LIS teachers, researchers and students, attended the commemorative meeting and have shared their fond memories of M. Shamsul Islam Khan. Some of them were Dr Moniruzzaman UNIC, Prof. S.M. Zabed Ahmed, Department of Information Science and library management, Dhaka University, Prof. Nasiruddin Mitul, Dean, School of Undergraduate Studies at National University Bangladesh, M Hossam Haider Chowdhury, Librarian at Independent University, Bangladesh, Dr Azizur Rahman, Dilruba Nazim, Senior Librarian, Manarat Dhaka International School and College, Dilruba Mahabuba, S.m. Humayun Kabir, Medical Library Association of Bangladesh (MedLAB) and many others.

South Asia Chapter, ASIS&T has been awarded special funding to pursue a project on ‘Dealing with COVID-19′

South Asia Chapter of ASIS&T has been awarded special funding to pursue a unique project on ‘Dealing with COVID-19 and Saving People’s Lives in South Asia (SA) Areas & Beyond – A Health Informatics Promotion Project’. This Chapter proposes to set up a YouTube channel to host multilingual videos for disseminating awareness on a variety of topics on Covid-19 in the South Asia region. This project runs in collaboration with the Asia Pacific and European Chapter to bring their experience dealing with similar viruses in the past. This Chapter expects that the content for these videos will help fight misinformation and disinformation regarding Covid-19 information by citing accurate and reliable sources of information.

icddr,b Library, in collaboration with Research4life and the Information Training and Outreach Centre for Africa (ITOCA), hosted a four day virtual Research4Life Master Trainer Course for the East Asia Region from 6 to 9 September 2021 successfully. The master trainer course aims to improve and enhance participants’ training skills for Research4Life new integrated portal to train Library uses in their respective libraries for maximum usage of Resecr4Life online resources. Fifty information professionals from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, and Nepal have participated in this program. Mr M. Al Mamun, in charge, icddr,b Library, served as the Lead Trainer and coordinator for this course.

M. Shamsul Islam Khan

The mourning program in memory of M. Shamsul Islam Khan will be held on 24 September, Friday at 10 A.M.
The program will be convened by Prof. SM Mannan, Department of Information Science and Library Management, Dhaka University. Honourable Vice-Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Prof. Dr Md. Sharfuddin Ahmed will participate in the event as a special guest.
Family members of M Shamsul Islam Khan will take part in the mourning program.
Library professionals from all levels, including medical libraries, academic libraries, special libraries, LIS teachers, researchers and students, are cordially requested to attend the commemorative meeting.
Note that a pioneer of Bangladesh’s editing and publications management industry, a legendary library professional, M. Shamsul Islam Khan, died on Friday, 3 September 2021 his residence in Dhaka. He was 72 and is survived by his wife and three daughters.

Mohammad Shakaought Hossain Bhuyian awarded MPhil degree

Mohammad Shakaought Hossain Bhuyian, Deputy Librarian, DU, has been awarded MPhil degree in Information Science and Library Management from the University of Dhaka. His thesis is titled “Assessing Users’ Needs and Satisfaction of Fine Arts Libraries in Bangladesh”. The research was conducted under Professor Dr M. Nasiruddin Munshi, Department of Information Science and Library Management, University of Dhaka. Earlier, Mr Shakaought obtained B.A. (Honors) and M.A degree in Information Science and Library Management from the same University.

M. Shamsul Islam Khan, a legendary library professional, dies at 72

A pioneer of Bangladesh’s editing and publications management industry, a legendary library professional, M. Shamsul Islam Khan, died Friday between 12.30-12:45 AM at his residence in Dhaka. According to his family, the cause of death could be a brain stroke or a massive heart attack. M. Shamsul Islam Khan was 72 and is survived by his wife and three daughters.

He was very excited about his newly appointed position as the Chief Editor of BSMMU Research Journal. His departure is indeed an irreparable loss for BSMMU Research Journal and the greater LIS community in Bangladesh.

Mr Khan was actively involved with the Library Association of Bangladesh (LAB) for a decade, where he served as a General Secretary and President for two terms each. He provided strategic leadership in implementing many projects for the development of LIS profession in Bangladesh. He will be remembered for his unparalleled dedication to his work, and his tremendous contributions to the library service sector in Bangladesh.

In his distinguished professional career over the last 47 years, he worked in several renowned organisations in Bangladesh, namely Bangladesh, Central Public Library, Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies, Cholera Research Laboratory (CRL), icddr,b, and Bangladesh University of Health Sciences. During this period, he carried out professional responsibilities in organising and managing libraries and high-quality publications.

Mr Khan completed his higher secondary education from the reputed Saadat College, Tangail. He later obtained his postgraduate degrees from the University of Dhaka and University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh in Information Science and Library Management and Mass Media and Journalism, respectively. M. Shamsul Islam researches on the cultural history and history of science. Their most recent publication is ‘Bibliography on diarrhoeal diseases. Besides a good number of scholarly articles, he was a chapter contributor to a book titled ‘Library and Information Science: Parameters and Perspectives, Vol. 1.

We are truly sorry for the loss of our LIS legend M. Shamsul Islam Khan. Our thoughts and prayers will be with M. Shamsul Islam Khan’s family. Rest in Peace!

WLIC 2021 closing session: the end of a beginning

After three dynamic days of sharing, learning, and creativity, IFLA President Christine Mackenzie closed our Federation’s first ever virtual World Library and Information Congress.

Setting out just a few of the highlights of IFLA’s first ever virtual WLIC, she urged participants to turn the connections they have made into lasting collaborations, delivering on the potential of a global library field. The closing session should in fact, therefore, be a starting point for new partnerships!

IFLA’s President-elect, Barbara Lison, underlined this focus on the future, drawing on the trends identified as priorities by participants in the President-elect’s session – see below for more!

IFLA Secretary General Gerald Leitner went on to encourage the audience to ensure that they made full use of all they had learned and heard during the Congress in the weeks and months to come, turning ideas into actions. To deliver on the goal of a strong and united global library field powering literate, informed, and participatory societies, everyone had a role to play, using the IFLA Strategy 2019-24 as a framework and reference point.

Finally, Christine Mackenzie formally closed the Congress, thanking all those involved – volunteers, participants, partners and headquarters staff – for their essential contributions to making a success of WLIC.

Libraries in the broadband ecosystem: gearing up for IFLA WLIC 2021

The past 20 months have required libraries around the world to not only find ways to deliver their services remotely when possible – but also to reflect on their broader roles in the digital ecosystem.

Libraries themselves are constantly looking to do more not only with digital tools, but also to ensure that their communities enjoy the possibilities that they bring.

The best way to do this is when libraries are fully integrated into official government strategies around broadband. IFLA has played a leading role in carrying out research into the ways in which this happens around the world.

IFLA’s 86th World Library and Information Congress – and first ever virtual Congress – began today, with IFLA President Christine Mackenzie and Secretary General Gerald Leitner inviting the global field to three days of varied and exciting sessions.

In her opening speech, Christine Mackenzie reminded participants of how essential libraries are for the communities they serve. In turn, opportunities to come together, as at WLIC, energised the field, helping to build understanding and connections, and spread great ideas and practice.

Gerald Leitner underlined Christine’s point, encouraging participants to make the post of the Congress as a chance to set the agenda for the future of the field.

With the conference taking place online, the IFLA President welcomed first timers, while also recognising the work of those who had given decades of service to the field and their communities.

With over 150 sessions planned, WLIC offers rich opportunities for learning from each other and co-creating the future of our field. Stay tuned!
