On January 7, 2025, the central library and archive of Gono Bishwabidyalay was officially inaugurated in honor of the birthday of Dr. Zafrullah Chowdhury, the esteemed founder of the institution. The inauguration ceremony was graced by the presence of notable dignitaries, faculty members, and library staff, making it a memorable occasion for all attendees.

The inauguration event commenced with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Shireen Haque, Head of the Women Affairs Reform Commission and wife of Dr. Zafrullah Chowdhury. Her presence underscored the significance of the event in celebrating Dr. Chowdhury’s enduring legacy. A special memorial publication on Dr. Zafrullah Chowdhury was unveiled from the archive section, commemorating his contributions and visionary leadership.

During the ceremony, Professor Sirajul Islam Chowdhury, former President of the Board of Trustees and Professor Emeritus of Dhaka University, delivered a heartfelt tribute. He described Dr. Zafrullah as a multifaceted genius, akin to Rabindranath Tagore, emphasizing the necessity of conducting extensive research on his life and work.

Exhibitions and Recognitions

Trustee Shireen Haque lauded the various initiatives undertaken to honor Dr. Zafrullah Chowdhury, including a photo exhibition, a book fair, media coverage, and the awarding of medals. Emeritus Professor Sirajul Islam Chowdhury echoed this appreciation, highlighting the importance of such activities in preserving and promoting Dr. Chowdhury’s contributions to public health and education.

A significant highlight of the event was a group photo session with distinguished guests in front of a portrait of Dr. Zafrullah Chowdhury at the archive. This moment symbolized the collective respect and admiration for his enduring impact on society.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by an array of esteemed guests, including: Professor Dr. Abul Hossain, Vice-Chancellor; Professor Trustee Abul Kasem Chowdhury, Former Vice-Chancellor; Professor Mansur Musa, Former Director General, Bangla Academy; Abu Mohammad Mukamel, Registrar; All Deans; Controllers; and Heads of Departments; Shagufta Hussain, Deputy Librarian; Dr. Md. Legacy of Dr. Zafrullah Chowdhury

Born on December 27, 1941, Dr. Zafrullah Chowdhury was a freedom fighter who dedicated his life to improving public healthcare in Bangladesh. In 1972, he founded Gonoshasthaya Kendra, an organization committed to providing medical services to underserved communities. His relentless efforts in ensuring healthcare for the poor earned him the title of ‘poor people’s doctor’.

A visionary in public health and education, Dr. Zafrullah was not only a physician but also a reformist who fought against social and economic injustices. His significant contributions include the formulation of Bangladesh’s National Drug Policy in 1982, which aimed at liberating the country’s pharmaceutical industry from external control.

Beyond healthcare, his commitment to social welfare was evident in various initiatives, including: Publications and Printing Services, Monthly Public Health Magazines, Shilpalaya (Cultural and Artistic Center), Pharmaceutical Initiatives, Women’s Development Centers.

Despite being a doctor, Dr. Zafrullah envisioned a society where marginalized communities had equal opportunities. This vision was realized through his efforts in establishing Gono Bishwabidyalay, which evolved from grassroots Gono schools. His educational philosophy emphasised the inclusion of economically disadvantaged, talented individuals, children of freedom fighters, and members of ethnic minority groups in higher education.

The inauguration of the Central Library and Archive stands as a testament to Dr. Zafrullah Chowdhury’s lifelong dedication to education, healthcare, and social justice. The event not only honored his memory but also reinforced the commitment of Gono Bishwabidyalay to uphold his principles. The establishment of this library and archive will serve as a vital resource for future scholars, researchers, and students, ensuring that Dr. Zafrullah Chowdhury’s legacy continues to inspire generations to come.
